How to Lose Weight: Use Your Brain

Losing weight (or getting in shape) requires more than willpower – it requires motivation, belief, and creativity… lots and lot of creativity. Boredom and deprivation are two of the top three killers of most people’s good health intentions. The third is something fitness gurus don’t talk about much, but is perhaps the most insidious, in that it is totally unavoidable…

Real Women Cook Steak

Not too long ago, I brought home a couple of thick, tender steaks that had been calling me from the grocery shelf. (And FYI, I now always try to buy meats with the EPA’s new humane certification labels.) Husband and I are pretty (gently) honest with each other about our cooking, and when he commented that he knew he should have pulled the steaks off sooner, but got distracted by the potatoes, I said, “Yeah, ya should’ve.” To which he responded, “Humph. I’ve never seen YOU cook steak!” Behold! The gauntlet – here at my feet! Well, can’t just leave it there, right?

Dinner With My Husband – A Not-So-Average Sunday

You probably already know that Sunday night is pizza night, and that this is 526% non-negotiable. This was the law even when I was in my “crazy person” stage of fitness and weight loss. What can I say? I loves the pizza. But last night we didn’t have the pizza. WHAT??!? It’s ok, calm down… I haven’t been abducted by aliens. We simply had pizza on FRIDAY, to celebrate the fact that my book (How To Be An Average Goddess) was finished, edited, and had finally been sent out for reviews.

Body Clearing – A Healing Technique

I recently read a blog by a witty and charming online goddess friend of mine, where she had an absolutely delightful conversation with her LBP, or Lower Belly Pooch. Over the course of this conversation, she not only comes to terms with this portion of her anatomy, but discovers that it wasn’t truly LBP who was at fault, but rather an error in her thinking. If you study any of the successful practitioners of the laws of the universe, you will find them all in agreement that one of the most necessary (and often challenging) steps to achieving the life of your dreams is to “get clear.”

Yes, you DESERVE to look good!

It is time for you to come to terms with the fact that your appearance is important. I might go so far as to call it critical. I’m not talking about societal standards, magazine airbrushing, or mandatory anorexia. I’m talking about recognizing, and displaying with pride the value of YOU. You see, women have a unique weapon in this jungle of survival of the fittest, and it’s one that men can’t ever touch.

She’s Bought the Farm

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA): A means to support local economy, improve your diet, reconnect with the land… maybe even lift your spirits. About a week ago, I heard about this thing called “Community Supported Agriculture,” or CSA. Now, not only am I considering becoming a member myself, I’m looking for ways to spread the word about this remarkable concept to everyone I know. In this fast-paced world of junk-food convenience and internet isolation, Community Supported Agriculture is a means of directly connecting to the highest quality produce available, while simultaneously building community and increasing local awareness.

Dinner With My Husband – An Average Monday

So here we are, Monday night, and we are just clearing away the dishes from a scrumptious meal. We even ate dinner at the table, with napkins and silverware, like real grown-ups! We talked a lot about how much fun we had yesterday, and a little about all of the social activities we have in the coming weekends. It is critically important, I’ve discovered, to remember to TALK to one’s husband now and again! Try it – you’ll like it. Tonight’s menu:

Putting On My Gym Shoes

So what gives? Why are there so many days that I view putting on my gym shoes like a sentence to the iron maiden? Can I argue that working out is not a valuable use of 30, 45, or even 60 minutes of my precious time? While I could simply chalk it up to the crazy person who lives in my head (!), the real answer for me (and those of you for whom this is a familiar scenario) is two-fold. The first issue is that all of us have an inner three-year-old with a tyrannical demand for instant gratification, and the fact is that the benefits of exercise take time to reap. The second factor, which is infinitely more complicated, is an issue of deserving.

Dangerously European

Since “discovering” the laws of the universe some nine months ago, I’ve been learning to let my body and my intuition guide me, rather than my sense of obligation… and can I just take a moment to tell you how much HAPPIER I am? It infuses me with energy, with passion, with a sense of joie de vivre. In preparation for the launch of my next big project, and possibly the next phase of my life, my new favoritest-thing-in-the-whole-world to do is to sit out on my patio, soaking up what few glorious rays of summer we’re gifted with in the Chicago area, drinking wine, listening to music, and writing away. I’ve come to term my new way of life as “dangerously European.” See, I live in the burbs, and my neighbors are less than 30 feet from me. In fact, I’d bet they’re at their kitchen table watching me right now, shaking their heads at my rapidly disappearing wine. Oh, did I mention it’s 10:30am? Haha!
